Model Engineer editors

Hi

It has been suggested that I ask this question to this newsgroup so here
goes.


Does anyone know the editor histories of The Model Engineer magazine? I
know that Percival Marshall was editor for many years (over 50 and
founder was quoted in one source) Also Martin Evans was also editor for
a long time. But does any one have details as to what year/month each
editor took charge?

My club has quite a collection (but not complete), the oldest being 1942
and certainly most from post WW2. Most are in bound volumes, but many do
not give the editors name. Perhaps because the relevant page got missed
in the binding process, but almost all have the inside title page
(frontispiece?), so I really don't know.

I'm in the process of indexing my club's library and I like to enter the
author/editor info if at all possible.

I'm using BookCat as a program by the way, it is an excellent product.

Frankly, Martin, I doubt very much that anyone has much of clue.
It was only last night that I replied to the present editor and tried
to give clues about the more popular 'contributors' of the past.
He was asking, amongst other things, about characters called
'Geometer', 'Exactus','Artificer' I have no doubt that all these were
actually Neville Shute's 'Trustee from the Tool Room'

For my part, I deplored the loss of old information from Model
Engineer and laterly Model Engineers Workshop. Maybe Magicalia has had
second thoughts.
One thing is certain, 'we' did a lot of work and it has been
deliberately destroyed.
I kept the info that I wanted on my hard drive.
End of story!

When D.J. Laidlaw-Dickson retired, there was some information about Exactus,
Artificer, and Geometer. They were in fact the editor, and staff. The
articles were used to fill space, both when money was short, and /or they
lacked contributions by authors. Duplex was actually two regular
contributors, who also wrote under their own names.

Oh dear. It sounds like someone has undervalued you and your friends by
ignorance. By understanding is that a lot of independant specialist
magazines get largely written by the editorial staff often using
pseudonyms. Of course many years (decades) later no one is 100% sure.

I read somewhere else about the "Trustee from the Toolroom" character
names used in Model Engineer.
